Houston proud member of team

By Dana Cohen and Melanie Mowry Etters

Being a part of a team is important to Nikia Houston, who has been a Popeye's restaurant team member for more than two years.

"She knows what to do," says store manager Rosa Sarvoma.

Houston's job tasks include prepping such side items as biscuits, mashed potatoes or coleslaw. She is also responsible for keeping the restaurant clean.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month. Florida's Agency for Persons with Disabilities is highlighting the contributions of Houston and other people with disabilities to the work force.

"People that I work with treat me nice. I like working here," says Houston.

Job coach Heather Summerford says, "Nikia loves her job and the feeling of independence she gains knowing that she is providing for herself."

Houston's manager says she has a very strong work ethic and an outgoing personality. "Not only is Nikia good at following directions, but she is always greeting customers and gets a long well with everyone," Sarvoma says.

When Houston is not working, she likes to shoot for strikes at the local bowling alley.

APD supports people with developmental disabilities to live, learn and work in their communities. The agency annually serves about 35,000 Floridians with developmental disabilities. For more information about the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, visit APDcares.org.
