In 2004 Pathways at Sunland was opened as a secure facility. Florida Statue 916 defines a secure facility as meaning ingress (entry) and egress (exit) to the facility is strictly controlled by staff. Pathways, currently a male only facility has 34-individual bedrooms divided into two residential wings. Recreational areas include a large indoor area and two large outdoor covered pavilions. Individuals residing at Pathways have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities. They have been charged with a felony crime but were found incompetent to proceed due to their mental retardation. After efforts to restore their competency have been unsuccessful the court has ordered they stay in a secure facility.
Pathways mission is to provide training that will prepare these individuals for their eventual return to the community. This is done through an active treatment process that identifies deficits and training goals to address those deficits. At a minimum, annual and quarterly meetings are held to monitor progress toward achieving these goals.
