Family Care Council Suncoast West and East heads to Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day in Tallahassee

By Brett Gottschalk

For the third consecutive year, Family Care Council (FCC) Suncoast charted a bus to participate in Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day. Thirty-nine advocates from the Suncoast Region attended to speak with their legislators to express gratitude for the services they receive through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), as well as advocate for individuals with disabilities. Through these services individuals with disabilities work, live, and participate in their communities more independently.

On the bus, conversations and updates were had on the pending budget and bills in both the House and Senate. Advocates were also educated how the APD program, that is vital to their well-being, functions. It was not all work however, advocates enjoyed dining, shopping, and fellowship prior to the event.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day was a busy day of rallies, visiting state representatives, and meeting other individuals from around the state. The day was highlighted by speeches by APD Director Barbara Palmer and Family Care Council Florida Chairperson Patricia Oglesby, among others.

It was a wonderful experience which helped to empower individuals and families to express themselves more effectively. As we returned home, we will continue our efforts to support the services of APD and educate state lawmakers of the needs of persons with disabilities. Together, we can make a difference!
