Law Enforcement Training

Crisis Intervention Training has resumed with implementation of CDC guidelines. This month, training was conducted at the Florida Sheriffs Association facility in Tallahassee for local law enforcement agencies of the Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County Sheriff Office, Jefferson County Sheriff Office, and Franklin County Sherriff Office.

Last month, training was conducted in Melbourne for the Palm Bay Police Department, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, and Melbourne Police Department.

As a part of the law enforcement annual certification curriculum team, Northwest Regional Program Manager for Waiting List and Community Affairs Octavius Jackson provides training and insight about the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. This includes targeting how to recognize an individual with a disability, outlining defined disabilities and their traits, effective ways to communicate in elevated or highly stimulated situations, key points to identify abuse or exploitation within the agency’s vulnerable population, and the services we can provide to alleviate crisis situations.

Lastly, the officers engage in a simulated activity with brain boxes provided by Ability 1st designed to assist the officers with understanding the concentration and communication challenges that would be present in an individual with a developmental disability. This training, which is coordinated and facilitated by Dr. Joyce Carbonell with the Florida Sheriffs Association, is provided across the state with the assistance of APD to improve communication and relations between law enforcement and the disability population.
