Pensacola Civitan Club Completes 500th Wheelchair Ramp Project

The Pensacola Civitan Club built their 500th ramp in December. On December 4, they completed a 26-foot ramp for Axel Bradley, who will turn two in February. Axel, who lives in Pensacola with his parents, Mark and Anna Bradley, was born with a developmental brain disorder and uses a wheelchair.

Work began at 8:30 a.m. with the ramp being completed by noon. The Pensacola Civitan volunteers were assisted by four members of the AMIKids Pensacola, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping youth develop into responsible and productive citizens. Mayor Grover Robinson, WEAR-TV-3, the Center of Independent Living of Northwest Florida, and the Agency for Persons with Disabilities were present to support the project and this milestone. The ramp project was funded by one of the Civitan members.

The Pensacola Civitan Club is dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. The family was truly appreciative of the ramp build and how “things are going to be that much easier.”

If you know someone who needs a ramp, send a message on the Pensacola Civitan Club Facebook page or email cindybarrington@bellsouth.net. Pensacola Civitan Club will help find a funding source if one is needed. Usually, the materials cost around $900 with the Civitan group volunteering their labor. Escambia County has a wheelchair ramp program that may fund one of these ramps. Wheelchair Ramp Program (myescambia.com)
