Just One of the Guys

Robert Stokes, who has a developmental disability, is an important team member at Five Guys, a popular burger restaurant in Orlando's historic SoDo District. Over the past 12 years, his duties have included everything from food preparation, cooking, washing dishes, and taking out the trash. He is also the guy who puts orders together, calls out numbers, and delivers tasty food to happy customers.

Stokes starts his day early in the morning. He independently rides the city bus and arrives at work around 7:30 a.m. Stokes says he enjoys the job and it has made a big difference in his life. “I show up on time, I don't call out sick. I make people happy.”

Five Guys is known for delicious burgers, fries, and shakes, which Stokes is proud to serve. The job also allows him some independence.    “He lives by himself in an apartment. He enjoys having his own life. He's able to pay his bills,” Job Coach Maryann Wittlin said.

Stokes says he has also met some amazing coworkers. They all affectionately call him, “Big Rob.” “I enjoy working here with my friends. I love them and they love me.”

Five Guys General Manager Charna Green says Stokes' work ethic is second to none. “Robert does everything I need him to do. He's actually one of my fastest employees. He does everything we can do, nothing different.”

In his spare time, Stokes enjoys laughing and socializing with friends.

“I have never seen him sad. He always uplifts your spirit,” Green said.
