APD and the Big Bend Transition Council
By Willie Dawkins-MillerOn February 14, APD Northwest Region Community Relations Liaison Willie Dawkins-Miller presented an agency overview to the Big Bend Transition Council at Leon County Schools Lively Technical College. She was joined by Klaressa Williams, an APD client that utilizes APD’s Supported Employment services.
Dawkins-Miller shared the various services provided by APD, its role in transition, and eligibility criteria. Williams shared her experience with the transition and APD services. Williams also shared her current successes as a Sales Associate at Kohls retail store, saying that she believes that if APD had not provided her with Supported Employment services she would be unemployed. Post-graduation, Williams attended the transition program at Leon County Schools where she connected with APD Supported Employment services. This connection is just one of the many benefits that are reinforced by the Big Bend Transition Council.
The Big Bend Transition Council is a group of school district personnel, local agencies, service providers, parents, and students who come together to coordinate transition services in the Big Bend area for youth between the ages of 11 and 21 who have a disability. The council assists with the transition of students with disabilities getting ready to move from school to adult life, which takes place over a period of several years. APD plays a critical role in the ongoing success of this program.
The Big Bend Transition Council has a Transition Resource Guide located at: BBTC Resource Guide rev. 2018.pdf.
