Cookies, Cakes, and Pies, Oh My!

By Kimberly Tharpe

ORLANDO, FL – James Webb has held the enviable job of working at Universal Studios for 13 years, and, better yet, he gets to work in the bakery of Universal’s huge main kitchen that supplies all Universal Studios’ restaurants.

Webb loves working in bakery production and says, “My coworkers always make me feel like part of the team.” Webb started working for Universal in other areas of the main restaurant but has always wanted to work in the bakery. Who wouldn’t want to work with cookies, cakes, and pies?

Webb’s supervisor, Chef Mike Harmen, says, “James is consistent in his job, polite to all, and very professional.” Universal makes it a part of their mission to be inclusive, and Webb has greatly benefited from these corporate values.

James Webb has a developmental disability and diabetes but doesn’t let that stand in the way of living life on his own terms. His mother, Patricia Webb says, “From the beginning, his father and I resolved to just bring him up as a little boy. Whether we approved or not, he led the way. We could only follow his lead and guide him as best we could.” He lives in his own apartment, loves working out at a local gym, competes in Special Olympics, and has volunteered to help with hurricane relief. Webb is an avid movie buff and loves Marvel movies and action television shows.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and APD is showcasing the workplace achievements of people with disabilities and celebrating the employers that hire them.
