Coming Together for Hurricane Michael

I want to say a big Thank You to so many clients, providers, Waiver Support Coordinators (WSCs), stakeholders, advocates, APD employees, and many more who came together before, during, and after Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle on October 10. I am very proud of the work everyone has done and is continuing to do to support our customers and staff through this major disaster.


Companies Honored as Exceptional Employers


The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), Blind Services, and Vocational Rehabilitation recognized 12 businesses that hire and retain people with disabilities with an Exceptional Employer Award on October 4. The businesses from around the state were honored with plaques made by people with disabilities.

All Former Carlton Palms Residents Transitioned to New Homes


On October 6, the final resident of Carlton Palms moved into a new home they chose in the community. This person joins the other 190 people who have selected community-based homes around Florida or have returned to their home state. Carlton Palms has officially closed.

Rain or Shine, Pryslak is Ready to Serve


Christopher Pryslak has worked in the culinary department for nearly 20 years in his hometown at St. Petersburg General Hospital. He walks to work every day, where he washes the pots, pans, and dishes and delivers food trays to patients in the ICU.


Important Dental Plan News from the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA)


All iBudget Florida customers will be required to use a dental plan as part of the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) program. Nearly all iBudget recipients will no longer receive dental services through iBudget and must enroll through the State Plan program in an SMMC dental plan.

Crisis Training


The APD Northwest and Southeast Regions Waiting List & Community Affairs teams provided education and behavioral insight on citizens with developmental disabilities during Crisis Intervention Training with law enforcement officers from Okeechobee, Martin, and St. Lucie counties, sponsored by the Florida Sheriffs Association.

America’s Workforce: Empowering ALL


The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Northwest Region partnered with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), and the Escambia County School District to facilitate an “America’s Workforce: Empowering ALL” event at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church in Pensacola.

Exceptional Employer Awards


Northwest Region attended the Exceptional Employers Awards Event at City Hall on October 4.

FAMU Health Fair


The APD Northwest Region participated in Florida A&M University’s Homecoming Health Fair last month. This annual event encompasses the involvement of various agencies and businesses that provide supports to our community.

DeLand’s Special Needs Family Resource Fair


Welcoming Hearts, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for all individuals with special needs by providing information and support to individuals, families, professionals, and the community, hosted a fantastic event at the Wayne G. Sanborn Center on October 13.

Volusia County’s Disability Employment Awareness Month Event


The Volusia Community Transition Team (VCTT) presented their annual Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) and Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) event in the University of Central Florida’s auditorium on the Daytona State College campus.
